Overview

A safety device designed to reduce the risk of unrestrained loads

The Flat Top Safety Barrier is a safety device designed to reduce the risk of unrestrained loads on the Flat Top from sliding off the in bye end of the flat top and down the drift when the conveyance is on an incline.

If a Flat Top load is accidently left inadequately restrained or unrestrained, it could potentially slide off the end of the Flat Top when the Flat Top is lowered down the Drift.

The Safety Barrier will prevent this from happening by catching any unrestrained sliding loads.

The Safety Barrier is designed to be fully automatic, lowering when the Flat Top is docked on a horizontal surface, and raising when the Flat Top is pulled off the dock.

Challenge

Reliance Hexham were approached by the customer to modify the existing Safety Barrier design.

The existing design used a closed hydraulic system to automate the system which required an excessive amount of maintenance and adjustments to keep operational.

Solution

Reliance Hexham’s engineering team worked closely with the customer to come up with a new, fully mechanical design using a crank shaft, push rods and springs.

The dynamic forces from operation were analysed using Autodesk’s Inventor Dynamic Simulation package.

These forces were then used to influence design decisions to ultimately come up with a robust and functional design that can withstand the harsh mining environment.

The entire project from concept, design, manufacture, assembly and testing was handled in house at Reliance Hexham.
