WHAT A CATCH !!!

In the words of Richie Benaud “what a catch “and welcome to another informative blog from the leaders in shaft safety equipment.

This blog is on shaft safety conveyance arresting equipment known as “Jack Catches”.

For those of you that are not familiar with Jack catches, when a shaft winder has a fault and goes into an over wind situation, the conveyance or cage goes up into the head frame, , and in the words of Isaac Newton “what goes up must come down”!

One of the requirements in AS3785.1 is that Jack Catches are dynamically tested and for good reason.

Not only does that conveyance need to be caught by the Jack Catches as it falls back down, it also needs to let the conveyance travel through the Jack catches at speed.

This means that the design of the Jack Catches must also quickly move back into the catch position once the conveyance had passed through.

Below is a slow-motion video showing the test rig we have for the testing of Jack Catches.

The video shows how the conveyance passes through the jack catch and other videos show the drop test.

The drop test proves that the jack catches can take the impact of the falling conveyance.
